Your teen or young adult is capable.

So why does helping them become more independent feel so difficult?

You can see their strengths.

You know there is ability there.

But everyday responsibilities can still become a struggle.

  • They forget things that matter.
  • They have trouble getting started.
  • They make plans but don’t follow through.
  • They become overwhelmed.
  • They depend on you to keep track of responsibilities.
  • They resist when you remind them.

Or they genuinely want more independence but don’t seem to know how to create it.

And somewhere along the way, you became the system keeping everything moving.

  • You remind
  • Prompt
  • Check
  • Follow up
  • Step in
  • Back off

Then step in again when things start falling apart.

Eventually you find yourself asking:

“How do I help my son or daughter become more independent without constantly managing their life?”

Steve Gundy exemplifying being overwhelmed with papers all over his desk

You’ve probably already tried helping

  • You’ve made lists.
  • Created schedules.
  • Set reminders.
  • Talked about responsibility.
  • Used consequences.
  • Given them more space.
  • Provided more structure.
  • Tried being patient.
  • Tried being firm.

Sometimes something works.

Then it stops working.

And you’re back to reminding, prompting, worrying, and wondering what you’re supposed to do next.

You don’t want to control your young adult.

But you also don’t want to watch them remain stuck.

So you find yourself caught between:

Pushing harder — which creates resistance

and

Backing away — which can feel like doing nothing.

There is another way.

Before you try another strategy, understand what is actually happening

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is jumping immediately from a problem to a solution.

  • “My son procrastinates.”
  • “My daughter isn’t motivated.”
  • “He has ADHD.”
  • “She has autism.”
  • “They struggle with executive functioning.”

Those things may be true.

But they still don’t tell us exactly where things are breaking down.

That is where the Steve Gundy Coaching Method begins.

Not:

“How do I make my young adult do this?”

But:

“What is actually happening?”

A focused student with curly hair in a classroom setting, engaging in learning.

Find the bottleneck

Your young adult may know exactly what needs to happen and still struggle to make it happen.

The difficulty might be:

  • Getting started
  • Remembering
  • Planning
  • Transitioning
  • Managing time
  • Handling overwhelm
  • Knowing the first step
  • Returning after an interruption
  • Recovering when something doesn’t go as expected
  • Following through after the initial motivation disappears

I call the place where functioning changes the bottleneck.

Because if we misunderstand the bottleneck, we often build the wrong solution.

Another reminder won’t solve every problem.

Neither will a planner.

Neither will a consequence.

Neither will another conversation about responsibility.

Bottleneck before strategy.

Stop carrying everything in your head — and theirs

Many parents gradually become their young adult’s external executive functioning system

  • You remember the appointment.
  • You know the deadline.
  • You notice what they forgot.
  • You remind them when they need to leave.
  • You keep track of what still needs to happen.

Eventually, important thoughts and responsibilities are living in your brain instead of theirs.

That may get something accomplished today.

But it doesn’t necessarily build independence for tomorrow.

One of the central ideas in this method is:

We’re building a place where thoughts wait for us.

An important thought shouldn’t have to survive inside someone’s working memory until exactly the right moment.

Intead:

Notice → Capture → Place → Return → Act

The thought appears.

  • Capture it
  • Give it a reliable place to wait
  • Return to it
  • Then act

Capture it. Don’t carry it.

Stop looking for the perfect system

There probably isn’t one.

Instead, we experiment.

Choose something meaningful.

Identify what seems to be getting in the way.

Change one thing.

Then watch what happens.

  • Did it help?
  • Where did it break down?
  • What did we learn?
  • What should we change?

This changes the conversation from:

“Why didn’t you follow the plan again?”

To:

“What did we learn from that experiment?”

A strategy that doesn’t work isn’t automatically a failure.

It gives us information.

Sometimes you have to let it breathe

As a parent, you can often see the problem coming before your young adult does.

Your instinct is to step in.

Remind them.

Fix it.

Prevent the consequence.

Sometimes intervention is necessary—especially when health, safety, significant harm, or serious concerns are involved.

But not every uncomfortable situation needs to be immediately rescued.

Sometimes we need to let it breathe.

Give the young adult an opportunity to experience what happened.

Notice it.

Think about whether the outcome served them well.

And decide what they might want to do differently.

That isn’t abandoning them.

It’s creating room for ownership.

The goal is not simply getting things done

The goal is helping your young adult increasingly understand:

  • How am I built?
  • What gets in my way?
  • What helps me?
  • What systems actually work for me?
  • What do I want?
  • What am I going to do about it?

That is different from building a young adult who becomes better at following a parent’s instructions.

The goal is ownership.

  • Less director.
  • Less external reminder system.
  • More coach.
  • More guide.

More like a trusted member of their board of advisors.

You still matter.

Your wisdom still matters.

Your relationship still matters.

But ultimately:

They are the boss of their own life.

Introducing the Steve Gundy Coaching Method Parent Resource

I created this resource for parents of teens and young adults with ADHD, autism, executive functioning challenges, or similar difficulties with independence and follow-through.

It is a practical six-module method designed to help you understand what is happening, determine where your young adult is getting stuck, and begin changing the way you support them.

Not by abandoning structure.

Not by pushing harder.

And not by expecting everything to change overnight.

By learning how to provide the right kind of support at the right place while gradually creating more room for ownership.

The six-module path

Module 1 — Understand What Is Actually Happening

Learn to slow things down and observe what is happening before immediately interpreting or correcting it.

Module 2 — Find the Bottleneck

Move beyond broad labels and identify the specific place where functioning is breaking down.

Module 3 — Capture, Don’t Carry

Learn how to create external places for thoughts, responsibilities, and intentions so neither your young adult nor you have to carry everything mentally.

Module 4 — Run the Experiment

Replace the pressure to immediately “get it right” with small, realistic experiments that help you discover what actually works.

Module 5 — When Follow-Through Breaks Down

Learn how to use breakdowns as information instead of immediately interpreting them as laziness, resistance, or failure.

Module 6 — Helping Your Young Adult Take Ownership

Begin shifting from managing your young adult’s life toward helping them understand themselves, build systems that fit them, and increasingly take responsibility for their own direction.

You won’t just watch videos

The Steve Gundy Coaching Method Parent Resource includes:

Six teaching modules

Short, focused video lessons designed to give you concepts you can actually use.

Parent Workbook & Resource Guide

Practical tools that help you apply each module to your own teen or young adult.

A framework you can return to

Because the goal isn’t memorizing another parenting program.

It’s developing a way of thinking you can use the next time something breaks down.

Why I created this

I understand this work from several directions.

Professionally, I have spent years working with individuals and families around behavior, executive functioning, independence, and meaningful progress.

I am also the father of an autistic young adult.

And I discovered my own ADHD in adulthood.

That diagnosis caused me to reconsider how I had functioned throughout much of my own life.

I knew what it was like to have ability.

Ideas.

Intentions.

And still struggle at times to consistently translate those things into action.

I had to learn that meaningful productivity wasn’t about forcing myself to function like somebody else.

I needed to understand how I was built and develop systems that worked with that.

Those experiences—as a professional, a father, and an adult with ADHD—came together to shape the Steve Gundy Coaching Method.

What progress can look like

I’m not promising that six modules will suddenly transform your young adult.

That isn’t how I think meaningful change works.

I’m looking for something more practical:

  • A parent who understands the problem differently.
  • Less unnecessary conflict.
  • A clearer bottleneck.
  • A system that fits better.
  • A young adult beginning to notice what works for them.
  • Responsibility moving from the parent toward the young adult.
  • A small experiment that creates a win.

A young adult beginning to say:

“I think I know what I need to do next.”

Not perfection.

Movement.

Because movement builds confidence.

And over time, movement can change trajectory.

A mother and son engage in a warm, heartfelt conversation indoors.

What if I understand the method but still need help?

That happens.

You may finish the resource and think:

“I understand what Steve is saying. I’m just still not sure what is getting in the way for my son or daughter.”

That doesn’t automatically mean you need coaching.

If you’re identifying bottlenecks, having different conversations, running experiments, and seeing movement:

Keep going.

You don’t need to hire a coach simply because you finished the resource.

But if your family remains stuck, individualized coaching is available.

I offer a Premium 4-Session Video Call Coaching Package for $800.

We can work directly on your particular situation, identify the bottleneck, determine realistic next actions, and develop supports around your young adult’s unique build.

The goal is not ongoing dependence on coaching.

The goal is helping your young adult move.
